須原屋茂兵衛. [Sugawara Mohei]. 1904?
Japanese style book with three doublepage color woodblock maps, other black and white illustrations, blue embossed paper wrappers, 7 x 4 3/4 inches (18 x 12 cm), Japanese string binding. Covers worn although title label is in very good condition, little loss to head of spine and lower left corner of cover, interior generally in good condition with the exception of 24 leaves at the back of the book and the back cover which are impacted by wormage. The three color maps are in very good condition. An uncommon and fascinating item, with OCLC listing only at the International Research Center for Japanese Studies in Kyoto. From our research the book relates to the calendar in Wago (native Japanese words that have been inherited from Old Japanese) and Kango (a Sino-Japanese vocabulary that originated in Chinese or has been created from elements borrowed from Chinese). Sections include the waxing and waning of the moon, the rise and fall of the tides,
lunar eclipes, and Yakudoshi, which relates to a set of superstitious “unlucky” years/ages in Japan. Of particular interest to the Western viewer are the three double page woodblock maps depicting the world, Japan, and China with an extensive Great Wall and Taiwan off its southern coast. The world map names present day Alaska as Russian America.
