Staining to back cover, some marks to front cover, wear to head and tail of spine (repaired split to head), long tear to last two pages (of index), mottling to pages of some sections, light dampstaining to edges of last several pages. Fore edge painting in excellent condition. In slipcase. The two-color plates depict famous painters discussed in the text. The mezzotint is a self portrait of John Opie, engraved by S.W. Reynolds; the etching is from an oil self portrait by William Hogarth, etched by Samuel Ireland. The lovely fore-edge painting is of "The Death of Procris" after Piero di Cosimo. Item #40113
