Boston. Ballou's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion. No date. Ca. 1850s.
Wood engraving, modern handcolor, double page from Ballou's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion, image size 13 1/4 x 20 1/2 on sheet 15 x 22 inches. Pinhole binding holes at centrefold (scarcely noticeable), archivally repaired tear in left margin, light crease at lower right corner, clean and bright image. This is a most attractive bird's eye view of Boston in the mid 1800s, looking over rooftops to the harbor. With its distant horizon and large sky, it would look beautiful framed. From Ballou's publication, which is scarcer than Harper's Weekly, this piece is also unusual in that it is signed in the print by both the artist (at lower left) and wood engraver (at lower right), unfortunately neither clearly readable.
