Matthews, Elizabeth (illus). Engraved by William Hooker.
London. Agricultural Society of Herefordshire. 1811.
Stipple and aquatint engraving with added handcolor, plate mark 8 1/2 x 11 1/4 inches on sheet 11 x 15 inches. Very good condition; very light spotting, mostly in margins. This fine plate is from the publication "Pomona Herefordiensis; containing coloured engravings of the old Cider and Perry fruits of Herefordshire" which was prepared by Thomas Andrew Knight, a wealthy landowner who was the most distinguished horticulturist of his time, and an excellent fruit breeder. Of particular historical interest is the "warts and all" quality of the fruit. The artist was Elizabeth Matthews, one of the many women artists active in botanical illustration and of whom little is known. Item #39394
