Hybrid Amaryllis. Regina vittata. AMARYLLIS.

Hybrid Amaryllis. Regina vittata.

Cotton, B. (illus). Engraved by William Say.
London. Horticultural Society of London. Ca. 1825.
Engraving, printed in color with added handcolor, sheet 16 x 11 1/4 inches, horizontal fold as issued. The fold has been taped on the verso with older tape, which has NOT discolored; short tear into image at lower edge, light overall toning. This is plate 15 from Volume V of the "Transactions of the Horticultural Society," a magnificent double page image of three red amaryllis blooms with stem and leaves, richly colored. A notable feature of this publication was its pioneering use of steel (as opposed to copper) for the engraved illustrations after 1820. A number of artists and engravers were involved in the production of the different engravings, but in all instances these are exceptionally beautiful images skillfully rendered by a combination of different techniques including engraving, mezzotint, aquatint and stipple, colored a la poupee and by hand. There is great subtlety to the coloring, giving a most realistic effect. [Dunthorne, #142]. Item #39370
