An exceptionally fine handcolored lithograph issued in the "Reports of Explorations and Surveys, To Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean" published by the U.S. Government. This is marked plate VIII, depicting a black winged, white breasted bird in a grassy landscape with water foreground. The Latin name given is the contemporary name for this bird. The region noted at the top left of this plate is California. Item #38958
