Color illustrated folding card, 7 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches, opening to color pictographic map with pop-up illustration of a plane popping up at top centrefold of opened card 9 1/4 x 10 inches (23.5 x 25.5 cm); in original mailing envelope dated April 17 1929. Card and map are in very good condition, clean and bright; envelope is soiled, sides opened; there is a 5 cent stamp. The centrefold pictographic map with pop-up illustration of a propeller plane by Ruth Taylor White shows Los Angeles at centre with five aviation routes marked. The charms of the region are depicted with little images of places and people at play. The envelope is titled: "A Cartograph - Commemorating Southern California's Third Air Mail Anniversary. April 17, 1929". Text on the front cover of the card (map verso): "Three Years Old! and one hundred times around the World! Western Air Express Air Mail" Item #37587
