Color pictographic / pictorial map, image 23 x 17 inches, on sheet 25 x 19 inches. Very good condition. This appears to be a later issue of a map originally published by the California Art and Engraving Company in 1931. It may have been issued to coincide with the Golden Gate Exposition of 1939 or the 1949 California Gold Rush Centennial. It is an attractive and detailed map by Robert Cormack, in the style of Jo Mora, with little pictographs representing the history of the goldmining region (extending from Chico in the north to Merced in the south, from Sacramento in the west to Virginia City in the east). Subtitle in the cartouche: "The Days of Old, the Days of Gold, The Days of '49. Featuring the Mother Lode of California and its later rival the Comstock Lode of Nevada with special emphasis on the Literary and Historical points of interest, particularly the locale made famous by Mark Twain and Bret Harte. This execution, although presented in a more or less humorous fashion, adheres as closely to topographic features as the material would permit..." There is a listing of numerous "Famous Landmarks, Points of Interest and Locale of Literary High Lights of the Mother Lode Country."
