Black and white engraved (mezzotint) frontispiece, decorative botanical borders throughout, all edges gilt, 320 pp, 6 x 4 1/4 inches, embossed cloth-covered boards with gilt decorative spine (hardbound). Cover moderately rubbed, 1864 owner inscription to front free endpaper, otherwise very good condition. Poetry by Joanna Baillie, Milton, Coleridge, Shelley, Bryant, Wordsworth, Shakespeare, Cowper, Drummond, etc. The frontispiece is a richly printed mezzotint engraved by Sartain of a mother and child. The poems by a variety of poets are divided into groupings: Admiration, Adoration, Content, Courage, Friendship, Gratitude, Honour, Liberty, Mercy, Patriotism and Superstition.
