London. William Curtis. 1777-1798.
Engraving, handcolored, image 11 1/2 x 5 on sheet 11 x 18 1/2 inches. Wove paper. Two small pieces of tape and slight indentations from old clips at upper border well outside of plate mark, 1 3/4 inch repaired tear to left edge extending just into plate mark, (although the tear only extends just into the plate mark, the tape on the back extends about a 1/2 inch; there is no discoloration), otherwise very good condition. With accompanying text sheet. A plate from William Curtis's magnum opus "Flora Londinensis" (de Belder #86, Dunthorne #87). This work is celebrated for the skill of the engraving and handcoloring; the plants are depicted life size, and include most of the British flora. An attractive image of a dark purple orchid with botanical details. Item #36222
