Engraving on laid paper, handcolored, image 7 x 4 1/2 inches (plus text area) on sheet 12 x 9 inches. Pencilled (plate?) number at upper right of sheet outside plate mark, fine condition. An exquisite botanical image by Pancrace Bessa, one of France's foremost botanical artists of the 19th century, engraved by Barrois for "Flore des Jardiniers, Amateurs, et Manufacturiers . . . d'apres les Dessins de Bessa". At lower left in tiny italics are noted the date of flowering (March) and the place of origin (Siberia). In this image, the flower and stalk are handcolored, the background leaf and plant left uncolored. Item #35974
