An exceptionally fine handcolored lithograph issued in the "Reports of Explorations and Surveys, To Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean" published by the U.S. Government. This is plate XXXIII from volume X, depicting 2 grey birds with white breasts perched on a branch and details of 2 heads and a tail (from the Colorado River area). The Latin name given is the contemporary name for this bird; no common name is given. The region noted at the top left of this plate is 35th Parallel. Item #33349
