Lithograph, hand colored, image area approximately 9 x 6 3/4 inches on sheet 11 x 8 1/2 inches. Light overall toning to paper, very good condition. An exceptionally fine handcolored lithograph issued in the "Reports of Explorations and Surveys, To Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean" published by the U.S. Government. This is marked plate IX, depicting a bird with large webbed feet in a grassy landscape. The Latin name given is the contemporary name for this bird. The region noted at the top left of this plate is California and Oregon. Item #33316
