Lithograph, hand colored, image area approximately 9 x 6 3/4 inches on sheet 11 x 8 1/2 inches. Light overall toning to the paper, couple of tiny spots, generally very good. An exceptionally fine handcolored lithograph issued in the "Reports of Explorations and Surveys, To Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean" published by the U.S. Government. This is marked plate VII, depicting a black and white bird in a grassy landscape with water background. The Latin name given is the contemporary name for this bird; no common name is given. The region noted at the top left of this plate is California. Item #33314
