New York. F.W. Christern. 1864.
Hardcover book 7 x 4 inches, 200 pp. discussing the temperamental differences between men of the northern regions of the globe and those of the southern. Covers are worn; light abrasion at small spot at bottom of spine; signature on title page. Overall good condition. The unidentified translator writes: "Our author attaches much importance to the modifications which climate superinduces upon our inborn faculties…and may lead to a more liberal view of the differences which exist between masses of men apparently of the same race. As there are different avenues that lead to heaven, there may be different means of arriving at political perfection." Chapter headings include Religion, Drunkenness, Suicide, Mendacity, Love, Courage, etc. There is also a chapter on Cicisbeism (here, a dictionary is essential) as well as a chapter with focus entirely on "The Italians."
