Hand colored copperplate engraving, plate size approximnately 9 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches on sheet size 11 1/4 x 9 inches. Signed in the plate. Includes fascimile of text sheet. Some light foxing; very good condition. Plate # 88 from George Edwards "A Natural History of Birds, Most of which have not been figured or described and others very little known..", published in London between 1743 and 1751. The Albatross is described as "big-bodied, a very long winged; I take it to be one of the largest, if not the very largest, Water-Bird in the World..." Edwards, a friend of Sir Hans Sloane and Mark Catesby, is a pivotal figure in ornithological history. Item #27446
