Schell, Fred B. (designed by). Samuel Sartain (engraved by).
Philadelphia. Daughaday & Becker. 1868.
Intaglio print with engraving, aquatint, etching, image 13 x 10 inches on sheet 16 x 10 1/2 inches. Scattered foxing and soiling, three tiny (pinhead or less) abraded spots in image, few small pencil-point-sized indentations (only noticeable in raking light), trimmed margins; still displays very well. A fine example of intaglio engraving from the hand of master engraver Samuel Sartain after Frederic B. Schell. Grant and his eldest son are on horseback and in uniform, his wife and other children stand in the foreground. The U.S. Capitol building is visible in the distance. Sartain's combination of intaglio processes produces a rich, velvety image. Item #40404
