La Belle Assemblée.
1816.
Etching / engraving with stipple engraving, handcolored, on sheet 8 3/4 x 5 1/4 inches. Bright condition; a few faint foxed spots, adhesive tape from previous matting to upper edge of verso (barely noticeable). An exquisitely etched and handcolored fashion print from the English Regency period, the era of Jane Austen and one of elegance in fashion and society. This example of the latest mode was published in "La Belle Assemblée or Bell's Court and Fashionable Magazine addressed particularly to the Ladies," published by John Bell. Vyvyan Holland (Hand-Coloured Fashion Plates 1770-1899, Batsford, 1955) describes this magazine as "one of the most important magazines of its time, and which contains some of the most delicate fashion-plates of all time..." Particular attention is paid to the delicately stippled face. A book in one hand and a ink pen in the other completes the pose.
