This is plate 15 from Sander's "Reichenbachia, Orchids Illustrated and Described." This publication featured beautiful life-size depictions of the orchids being introduced to England at the turn of the century, published by a horticultural firm which had orchid collectors working around the globe. The work was named after the great orchidologist Heinrich Gustave Reichenbach. Although the attribution is to "Joseph Mansell Del. Et Lith." at lower left corner, the plate is signed "H.G. Moon". Both the subject and printing technique are typical of late Victorian tastes: a passion for the exotic orchid, just being introduced to European and American homes and gardens, and the chromolithographic technique (where as many as 30 plates might be used to build up the brilliance of color that typifies this technique).
