CHROMOLITHOGRAPHS - FLOWERS / SENTIMENTS)         Jones, Owen (illus).
Eleven chromolithographs of fruit and flowers from "Fruits from the Garden and Field."
Stock ID: 36889
London. [ 1850].
Each plate 10 x 7 inches. Plates have overall light foxing; the peach has discoloration at the top left of the sheet. Loosely laid into the original elaborately embossed leather binding which has been mended with a soft brown leather spine. Sold as a group of plates. This is a group of 11 of the 12 plates that were published in Fruits from the Garden and Field. As one would expect with a work associated with Owen Jones, the chromolithography is of an extremely high quality, including the use of gold lettering. These are naturalistic treatments of plants, as opposed to the decorative design of much of Jones work, but pattern is an important part of the image. Each plant is associated with a quality or sentiment, which is elegantly but lightly lettered in gold (and sometimes a little hard to read). The fruits and flowers are: apple (utility); pomegranate (hard to make out - amb..?); wheat and hops (strength & wealth); blackberries and other red berries (charity); strawberries (kisses); grapes (hospitality); hazelnuts? and grain (retrospection); cherries (smiles); mulberries? (tears); peach (sensibility?); apricots (independence).

HAWAII)         Freeman, Tip (illus).
Tip Freeman Pair of Hawaiian Flowers - original airbrush paintings.
Stock ID: 35456
No date. ca. 1950s.
TWO original vintage "airbrush paintings" (color stencils), each measuring approximately 13 1/2 x 10 inches on artist board measuring 20 x 15 inches (white flower) and 18 x 14 inches (red flower). The white flower has three small light brown spots in the upper area of the image and one tiny black speck in the same area; a couple of specks in the border and creasing to the board at the lower left corner - this is well outside the image. The red flower has some light creasing to the board which does enter the image, but is not really noticeable; there is overall light spotting to the border area, but because it is very regular and light it also is not distracting. The red flower is on a slightly whiter paper than the white flower, but they would still make a nice pair. Both are matted to a 16 x 20 inch size. Tip Freeman, celebrated for his Hawaiian motifs, moved to Honolulu in the 1930s and opened a studio in 1943. The white flower may be a night blooming cereus and the red flower a ginger. The prints are signed in the image at the lower right.

Frankfurt, Germany. Ca. 1612.
Engraving with handcolor, image 13 1/2 x 8 inches. Very good condition. Conservation matted. From Emanuel Sweert's Florilegium, first issued in 1612, with five subsequent editions. "Emanuel Sweert, a Dutch florist, was at one time Praefectus of the gardens of the Emperor Rudolf II, and it was at his behest that the work was produced. Although it did not contain prices it also served as a catalogue of plants offered for sale by Sweert at the Frankfurt Fair." (de Belder catalogue). The intaglio processes of engraving and etching had only recently been applied to botanical illustration, allowing for a finer, more spontaneous line than the woodcut. Pictured are a number of varieties of the Amaryllis family.

Ca. 1612-1647.
Copper plate engraving, hand colored, plate size 13 x 8 inches on sheet 15 x 10 inches. A souple of scattered spots, light soiling in lower right margin, but generally good condition. A stunning image of varieties of hyacinth, showing the bulbs with flowers, from a 17th century edition of Emanuel Sweert's Florilegium. The coloring is old, but not original. The Florilegium highlighted stock from Sweert's nursery; bulbs such as the tulip and hyacinth were highly sought after in Holland in the first part of the 1600s, reaching peak prices in 1737, after which the bubble burst, leading to the general understanding of "tulip mania" as the first recorded speculative bubble...

VEGETABLES)         Snyders, Franz (original painting). Engraved (mezzotint) by Richard Earlom.
A Herb Market. In the Gallery at Houghton.
Stock ID: 39320
London. John Boydell. 11-13- 1779.
Mezzotint engraving, handcolor, plate mark 16 1/4 x 22 1/2 inches on sheet 19 1/4 x 26 1/2 inches. Several edge tears with only one just entering plate mark area at lower centre (still well outside of image), light dampstain at top left corner (at least 3/4 inch from image), creasing and foxing in the margins but plate mark area is largely clean and bright. An exceptional image, both in the original composition and the quality of the technique with which it has been translated to print. There is a very rich, gesso like, quality to the color which is quite gorgeous in and of itself, but also is most suitable in the depiction of this fine vegetable harvest.
