Map with outline hand color, 15.5" x 13" including decorative border. Several soft creases in map area, two short tears at left edge just entering the map border, a few tiny spots at center of left border; none of these faults are very obvious - in general good condition. A detailed early map of a thriving portion of the colony of Australia, compiled "From the M.S. Maps in the Colonial Office, the Surveys of the Australian Agricultural Company, And the Routes of Allan Cunningham". There is an inset plan at lower right: "Sydney from the New South Wales Almanack" (5.5" x 2.5") marking such spots as the Albion Brewery, Ft. Phillip and Market Wharfs. The main map covers the area from 30 to 36 degrees south latitude and longitude 147 to 153. The eastern part of the map is detailed with topographical features well marked; the western and northern areas are both largely unmapped.

Western Australia shows southwest area of current state, from just north of Perth to Albany with not a great deal of information between the two - it is "from recent Surveys sent to the Colonial Office". The whole of Tasmania is shown and including Bas Strait to Wilson Promontory on the Australian mainland.

BOOKLET, black and white photo illustrations throughout with green and white pictorial borders, black and white fold out panoramic photo illustration (5 x 34 1/2 inches), unpaginated, 5 3/4 x 9 inches, gilt lettered pictorial wrappers. Text block detached from the wrappers, otherwise very good condition with light wear to extremities of cover. The star of this booklet is the panoramic view of the Sydney harbor, looking from the city in the direction of Manly, with Circular Quay to the right hand side of the image (no Sydney Opera House!) and stretching inland to Miller's Point. In the smaller pictures are featured images of beaches, steamers, notable views and buildings. No date but there are pictures of street scenes with no cars, just trolley cars.

Binding is in poor condition, front hinge separated; first several pages separated from text block, interior generally in good clean condition, with soft creasing at the top right margin of several pages and one of the plates, map in very good condition. The four chromolithographs are portraits of Tasmanian aborigines by Mr. Bock. The appendix includes a Vocabulary of dialects of Aboriginal Tribes of Tasmania, and a listing of Aboriginal names of places in Tasmania.
